Choosing and applying a cutting allowance

Keep measured area separate from your reserve for cuts before calculating boxes.

Measure the area to cover

Sketch every zone that will receive the same flooring. A 5 × 4 m room has an area of 20 m². For recesses, divide the space into rectangles and add only the areas you intend to cover.

Avoid counting a strip twice when splitting an L-shaped room. Decide whether flooring continues under fixed furniture or stops before it. That project decision must be made before the measured area can represent your plan.

Connect the allowance to the layout

An allowance represents extra material for cuts and other planned needs. Its size depends on the laying pattern, piece dimensions and room geometry. Check installation information before treating an example percentage as the right choice for your floor.

If you choose 10% for 20 m², you add 2 m² and reach a target of 22 m². Do not add another 10% when ordering boxes: whole-box rounding comes afterwards and serves a different purpose.

Understand the area model

A square-metre estimate is not a cutting layout. Narrow corridors, diagonal installation or a continuous pattern can create cuts that a simple rectangular calculation does not represent. Make a laying plan when the arrangement calls for one.

Keep skirting, trims, adhesive and underlay separate because they have different units and purchasing rules. If you want spare pieces for later repairs, record that as a separate decision and check how the combined target affects whole boxes.

  • Sketch the layout before choosing a percentage.
  • Avoid overlaps when adding measured areas.
  • Record why you chose the allowance so you can review it.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10% always the right amount?

No. It is used to demonstrate the calculation. The product, laying pattern and room layout may justify a different choice.

Does the allowance include broken pieces?

It can include whatever reserve you choose for mishaps. The calculator cannot predict breakage or inspect the condition of the material you receive.
