Calculate materials for your US home project

Use feet for room dimensions, square feet for flooring and the units printed beside each field. These calculators show the material estimate, your selected allowance and the quantity purchased after rounding up to full containers, cases or bags.

Paint gallons and flooring cases

For paint, enter the coverage per coat in square feet per US gallon. Measure doors and windows rather than applying a standard opening size. The number of coats and whether you include the ceiling both affect the quantity to buy.

For flooring, use the square feet per case from the product label. A 12 × 15 ft room has 180 sq ft. With a chosen 10% allowance, it needs 198 sq ft; a case covering 22 sq ft gives exactly nine cases.

Curtain fabric: inches in, yards out

Measure the rod, finished drop and fabric width in inches when using imperial mode. The calculator converts the total fabric length to yards. A yard is a length along the roll; it does not describe the width of that roll.

A 72-inch rod, double fullness, two panels and 54-inch fabric require two widths per panel. Four widths cut to 96 inches, including hems and headings, use 384 inches, about 10.67 yards, before any pattern-repeat adjustment.

Potting soil: check cubic feet and quart labels

Use the planter's internal dimensions and fill height, then subtract the root-ball volume. In imperial mode, this calculator displays soil volume in US liquid gallons. A bag labelled 1 cu ft represents about 7.4805 US gallons, or 28.3168 litres.

A dry quart differs from a liquid quart. If a bag only says qt, check the manufacturer's volume information before converting it. Metric mode can simplify comparison when litres are provided. Enter the bag price yourself; the result does not retrieve store prices or availability.

Frequently asked questions

Does the material total include installation or delivery?

It multiplies your entered material price by the calculated purchase quantity. Budget separately for labor, shipping, preparation materials and any applicable charges not included in your price.

Can I divide every quart-labelled soil bag by four?

Only if the label explicitly uses US liquid quarts. US dry quarts have a different volume, so confirm the unit or use the manufacturer's stated litre equivalent.
